YOUR COMPUTER’S ADDRESS

Yes, you read it right any device that is connected to the internet has a unique address called the IP address.

IP address or the Internet Protocol address is a unique combination of numbers that is assigned to all devices connected to the internet. To explain the role of an IP address let us consider a scenario where we are writing a letter to someone. Only if we enter the correct address on the envelope will the postman know where to deliver the letter. Computers also work in a similar way, when we search for something on the internet your device requests data from the data centre where all your data is stored and the data centre in return provides the necessary data. But there is a small problem as there are thousands of searches made every second, this is where the IP address comes into play. Each device is assigned a unique address so that the data centre will know exactly what data a device has requested.

If you want just a basic idea as to what an IP address is then this will be enough if not then read on!

As of now, Ipv4 is the most commonly used although we are slowly moving to Ipv6. A normal IPv4 address looks something like 192.168.32.152. It contains four sections called octets and these octets can have any number between 0 and 225. An IP address consists of two parts called the network part and the host part. If we have two devices connected to the same WiFi then the network part of both the IP addresses will be the same but the host part will be different. In this case, 192.168.32 is the network part and .152 is the host part.
